About us
Advocacy for Older People was set up as an independent charity in 1996 in response to concerns voiced by older people within the borough. Greenwich Social Services provided the initial funding and the steering group included the local pensioners’ forum and representatives of Greenwich ’s diverse minority ethnic communities. Areas of concern, that they wanted the organisation to concentrate on, included:
- People being assessed for comprehensive care packages
- People being discharged from hospital care
- People using complaints procedures
- People in residential and nursing homes or sheltered accommodation
- Minority ethnic communities, particularly those who do not have English as a first language
Since then, we have worked with over a thousand older people and over a hundred volunteers.
Now we offer long term citizen and short term crisis advocacy to older people living in the community, in sheltered housing and in care homes and these projects are funded by the Big Lottery Fund, City Bridge Trust and  Lloyds TSB
We have also started a project offering group advocacy, reminiscence work and the preparation of life history books to residents in two care homes in the borough. We hope to extend this work to other residences.
